Emelec overcame initial setbacks and took advantage of their best game, and Olmedo defensive
errors to start off the season with a 2-0 win in the Ecuadorian national tournament.
There were just minutes of intensity from Olmedo’s performance yesterday at the beginning of the game with surprise attacks imposed on Emelec. As time went on Emelec began to control the game on the pitch with constant and clear attacks on Olmedo’s net.
Emelec won the midfield battle along with the support of midfielders Fernando Gaibor and Fernando Giménez, outperforming Olmedo’s defense that could not contain the fast play of the above mentioned players.
Emelec benefited from Olmedo’s defensive errors and in the 10th minute of play striker Marlon De Jesus received the ball then he escaped Olmedo’s defenders after that De Jesus took a powerful shot on net to put the “Blues” on the board, 1-0.
Olmedo did not react offensively, and Coach Marcelo Fleitas’s squad dominated the game, especially in the midfield of the pitch.
Emelec’s pressure caused a shared error by keeper Dennys Corozo and defender Cristian Minda, that allowed the second goal scored by Gaibor who lifted the ball over the goalkeeper and made it 2-0 after 28 minutes of play.
Emelec had more options to increase the lead with shots taken by Gaibor, De Jesus and Pedro Quiñonez but goalkeeper Corozo prevented the fall of his net, while on offense Olmedo was unproductive.
With the 2-0 lead Emelec controled the match against an opponent who lacked ideas in the midfield and had very little offensive attacks.
Good start of the season for Emelec, and now await their upcoming international match in the Libertadores Cup against visiting Olympia of Paraguay this Thursday February 9th in Stadium Capwell.
